MARCIA DOUGLAS /
NOVELIST, POET & PERFORMER
PROJECT BRIEF / Brand Identity & Website Development
What does a novelist’s website need to hold?
Marcia Douglas is a Jamaican novelist, poet, and performer. Her five books, from Electricity Comes to Cocoa Bottom to The Jamaica Kollection of the Shante Dream Arkive, come threaded with drawings and footnotes on plants, animals, and natural phenomena. Colin Grant called the work “brave and strange” in The New York Review of Books, which describes most good novels loosely and hers exactly.
In 2025, through Ampersand International, I made her an identity: a dotted spiral for a logo, sea green, mango yellow, and red, and a set of hand-drawn dragonflies, drums, leaves, and a microphone. Then the website: home, about, a bookshelf with a page for each book, and contact. It ended with a recorded handover, so the next book can go on the shelf without me.
